STEAM
Science, technology, engineering, arts and math — also known as STEAM — are the key to a well-rounded education that lets students explore the world in which they live. Through STEAM, students learn how to become adaptable, critical thinkers and learners — an important skill that they’ll use into their adult lives.
Connected Futures
No child in the district will be without internet thanks to the Connected Futures initiative, which provided 51,000 students with wireless tablets, six months of LTE data/internet and a year of technical support. The $23 million initiative was made possible support from foundations and corporations as well as more than 100 others who are committed to ensure that all students have the resources they need for virtual learning.
Launch, Learn, Code
The Ford Resource and Engagement Center (FREC) at the Fisher Magnet Upper Academy is home to the Launch, Learn, Code program in partnership with the Jerome Bettis Bus Stops Here Foundation. Through the program, funded by Flagstar Foundation and the Junior League of Detroit, young women are introduced to basic computational languages and technical concepts for building a website and creating apps.
Book Scholarships
A three-year investment from Michigan Futures Inc. and the Berman Foundation has given the district a glimpse at how Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine graduates are doing in college. The Book Scholarships provide support to bridge the gap between high school and college, showing where more support is needed. They also have significantly improved alumni tracking.
Cooke STEM Academy STEM Lab
The Provost-Torgow Fund made possible the new state-of-the art STEM lab for students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. The lab includes high definition technology, engineering resources including STEM Hands-on Kits and Kids Spark, MakerBOT 3D Printers, an engineering curriculum and lab furniture.
