The Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation, alongside the Newman Family, has created an opportunity for 1 male and 1 female DPSCD senior-varsity athlete to matriculate into higher education.  

Mr. George Curby Newman was a DPSCD physical education teacher, coach, and long-time Southeastern High School Athletic Director. He ran the PSL Swim and Tennis Championships and officiated countless sporting contests across the district, even after retirement.  His family-established award celebrates Mr. Newman’s legacy of professionalism, powerful knowledge in his field, stewardship, and passion for the student-athletes of DPSCD. 

 

Application Requirements:  

    • Complete the online application 
    • Must be a graduating senior from DPSCD 
    • A letter of recommendation by DPSCD teacher and coach 
    • Official transcript 
    • Acceptance letter, program registration, or enrollment confirmation 
    • 2.5 cumulative GPA 
    • Students will be required to submit a 1-page APA formatted personal statement explaining: 
      • The importance of being a student-athlete 
      • What impact have sports had on your life 
      • Why you feel you deserve this scholarship
