Empowering Our Students, One Step at a Time: Recap of the Detroit Free Press Kids Marathon Shoe Fitting Event
At the heart of our mission is a commitment to ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed—both inside and outside the classroom. Physical health plays a significant role in academic success, which is why the Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation is thrilled to partner with the Detroit Free Press for the Kids Marathon. This partnership provides 250 DPSCD students with the opportunity to participate in the marathon free of charge, removing barriers to access and encouraging them to stay active while building confidence and perseverance.
Through this collaboration, DPSCD students will receive transportation, running shoes, and gear, all thanks to the generous support of our partners. We are excited to help them prepare for the Detroit Free Press Kids Marathon on October 19, where they’ll run the final leg of the race and celebrate their hard work and dedication.
Ready, Set, Fit: Preparing Our Students to Go the Distance
Last Thursday, we kicked off the first of several exciting milestones for our students—fitting them for their running shoes at five different schools. The energy was electric as students eagerly lined up to be fitted, gearing up for their marathon journey. Representatives from the Free Press, Priority Health, Running Lab, and Black Men Run joined us in creating an informative, fun, and memorable experience.
We had the privilege of visiting Golightly Education Center, where we engaged directly with the students during their fitting. It was heartwarming to see their enthusiasm and excitement as they learned about proper shoe fitting and how it will help them perform at their best come race day.
Participating Schools:
- Davison Elementary-Middle School
- DIA
- Golightly Education Center
- John R. King
- Mackenzie
This experience was about much more than just receiving a new pair of shoes. It was about ensuring that our students are healthy and supported, which directly contributes to better educational outcomes. Studies show that active students perform better academically, and by promoting health and wellness through this partnership, we’re helping our students achieve their full potential.
Foundation for Victory: The Power of a Proper Fit
Shoe fitting is a critical aspect for runners, and it was an eye-opening experience for our students. Running can be physically demanding, and having the right shoe makes all the difference. Experts from Running Lab measured each student’s feet, ensuring they were fitted with the perfect pair of running shoes. A proper fit not only provides comfort but also helps prevent injury and enhances performance, especially for young runners taking on such an exciting challenge.
Looking Ahead: The Detroit Free Press Kids Marathon
The Detroit Free Press Kids Marathon is a fantastic event that encourages children to stay active and have fun while completing a significant goal. On October 19, our students will run the final 1.2 miles of their marathon journey, having tracked their progress throughout the season. The race day will be their moment to shine, where they’ll celebrate not just their physical achievement but also the lessons of hard work, determination, and goal-setting.
We are incredibly proud of our students and grateful for the unwavering support of our community partners. Together, we’re fostering a healthier, more engaged, and empowered generation of students.
